Engineering Private College of Cut Fee to Retain students

The state are probably for the first time going all-out to private engg colleges students.If freebies fail to stop a student from moving to another college, then in a last-ditch effort the college authorities may even refuse to release students’ certificates and tuition fee paid.

From offering fee waiver in the first year to even lowering annual fee for the management quota seats by almost half, the private colleges are doing everything possible to ensure that students don’t drop out after the second round of admission. 

Students are expected to pay the fee and surrender their certificates immediately on joining an engineering college after the first allotment. It is at this time the management lures the students with freebies.

It has come to our notice that many so-called reputed engineering colleges in Kerala are resorting to unethical practices of retaining students by not returning certificates and tuition fee when they get second allotment in another college.

This year even before the completion of admissions, officials believe that more than 25,000 seats are sure to go vacant. Last year 18,000 seats had gone vacant.

Various Deptarment:

In majority of colleges, not even 50% seats have been filled in IT, electronics and communication, and computer science.

However, civil, and mechanical engineering are still popular with almost 90% seats filled in most collegesThere are 153 engineering colleges in the state, of which 141 are self-financing colleges.
Experts following trends in industry said that even by a generous estimate, around 35 private engineering colleges won’t be able to fill even 10% seats in IT, computer science, and electronics. 

In other branches, most of the private colleges have managed to fill only about 50% seats.While tuition fee for a government quota seat is Rs 65,000, a student on management quota has to pay Rs 1.24 lakh per annum.
