Ragging Fading into Oblivion in Engg Colleges 2013

Ragging fading into oblivion in engineering colleges

Engineering colleges to this date Pravish R, an executive at a private IT organisation forget the task he was asked to perform as part of the ritual called ragging in college a few years. When he told his seniors that he had enrolled for civil engineering, they placed a pebble in his hand, a similar size from the college campus. The incident did shock me then, but whenever I look back at that incident, I cannot help but chuckle,.Today students of engineering colleges can thank their stars that they need not undergo any such ordeal. With strict measures put in place in most such institutions, ragging is practically becoming something unheard of.

Yes, ragging has been more or less eliminated in most engineering colleges in the State, especially at Anna University, says Arulshelvan, Assistant Professor of Media Sciences and NSS programme co-ordinator at the varsity this regard under the aegis of CEG Dean Prof Chellappan, prominent among them being a patrol that scours the varsity campus throughout the day.Teachers are allotted time-slots when they will have to be part of the patrol, which will go on until about one-one and half months after the commencement of the academic year.

In addition, department-wise committees have been formed to maintain vigil and NSS units of the college conduct campaigns against the evil, he explains.Vikram V, a civil engineering lecturer at a private college in the city says that he is yet to come across any instance of ragging. A few years ago, we would invariably encounter such incidents within days after the start of the academic year. Over the years, thanks to most college managements and even the government taking a stern view of the same, ragging has largely diminished..

The student of Anna University, Vikram feels he was unlucky in that such measures were not in place then. Ragging used to take place regularly on the sly, the senior-junior relations in the college. Our introduction to the seniors was through the ragging sessions; although I do not endorse the harassment, Vikram’s views could perhaps be a barometer of the scenario in most private engineer in colleges. A first-year student of electronics and communication engineering at one such college, Nithin, says that he is yet to receive a call  from his senior, either in the hostel or during class-hours. It has been smooth sailing so far, I hope it remains that way.
